Seventeen and One Fake ID Away: The Age Verification Gap on Adult AI Platforms

There's a sentence you'll find in the terms of service of nearly every adult AI image platform, including ones like ours: users must be 18 or older. It's a legally necessary sentence. It's also, if we're being honest with ourselves, the least interesting part of the age verification story.

The interesting part is everything between that sentence and the reality of a sixteen-year-old with a parent's credit card, a screenshot of a classmate, and forty-five seconds of free time.

What Platforms Say They Do

The industry standard toolkit looks something like this: a checkbox at signup (worthless on its own), an age gate screen (worthless, full stop), payment verification (better, since credit cards are mostly adult-held), and — on the more serious end — document checks or selfie-based 'age estimation' AI that scans a face and spits out a number.

That last category is where a lot of hope and marketing budget has gone. Vendors sell age assurance as a frictionless fix: no ID upload, no human reviewer, just a camera and an algorithm. Accuracy claims in the 97-99% range get tossed around in pitch decks.

Here's what those claims leave out.

Where the Math Meets the Hallway

A 97% accuracy rate sounds great until you do the uncomfortable arithmetic. If a platform onboards even 10,000 users in a month and 3% are misclassified, that's 300 people on the wrong side of the gate. And the errors aren't evenly distributed — age estimation models consistently struggle with certain skin tones, certain age ranges (teens are the hardest, because they're the closest to the threshold), and certain lighting conditions. The demographic most likely to try to sneak in and the demographic the technology is worst at reading overlap almost perfectly.

Enforcement actions tell the story the marketing doesn't. When regulators — the FTC, state attorneys general, and in the UK, Ofcom under the Online Safety Act — have dug into adult platforms' age checks, the pattern repeats: platforms claiming robust verification while their actual implementation amounts to a self-reported birthdate. In several consent-tech and nudify-adjacent cases, the 'verification' was a dropdown menu.

The Behavioral Layer Nobody Talks About

Document checks and face scans are the visible layer. But some of the most effective screening is behavioral, and it's cheap: usage patterns that scream 'minor' are usually visible early. Accounts uploading yearbook photos. Prompts referencing high schools. Payment instruments that fail adult-match checks. Session timing that clusters around after-school hours.

We won't pretend the industry has cracked this. But the platforms that take the problem seriously treat it as a signal-fusion problem — no single check is trusted, and contradictory signals trigger human review. The platforms that don't take it seriously treat age assurance as a compliance checkbox, which is exactly what it becomes.

The Gap That Verification Can't Close

Here's the harder truth, and it's one that deserves more airtime than it gets: even a perfect age gate on the user side doesn't solve the subject problem. A verified adult can still upload a photo of a minor. Age assurance verifies the person at the keyboard, not the person in the pixels.

That's why serious platforms pair age checks with subject-side screening — detecting images of minors in the upload pipeline, blocking school uniforms and childhood photos from processing, and refusing prompts that reference minors entirely. It's also why 'we verify our users' is an incomplete answer to an incomplete question.

What Actually Works

A few things the evidence supports:

Why We're Writing This

Some readers will ask why an adult AI image site is publishing a critique of age verification. The answer is simple: we'd rather own the gaps in this industry than pretend they don't exist. Every platform that treats age assurance as a checkbox makes the whole category more dangerous — for minors, for subjects, and for the adults using these tools in good faith.

The teen who tested the filters and got through didn't beat the system. The system was a screen door. Fixing that isn't just a compliance project. It's the price of admission for anyone who wants to operate in this space with a straight face.
